The Benefits of the Double Cleanse

Updated: Apr 17

This could probably be one of the simplest ideas in skin care – the double cleanse. To cleanse, to wash twice. Sounds pretty simple and all. But like in life, things that are easy to understand, things that are simple, still need to be done the right way and for the right reasons. The double cleanse is no exception to the rule and I want to take a few minutes of your time to run through this important skin care routine. So, let’s take dive into this topic together and I hope we will all come out the other side feeling refreshed and reinvigorated.

First of all, why can’t we simply continue using our soap and water and face wipes? Well you can and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But here at TalkBeauty2Me we believe that to paint the beautiful masterpiece that is your face, you need the perfect canvas that is your skin. And there’s nothing better than the double cleanse to make sure you are using the best possible canvas every single time you wake up in the morning.

So right off the bat you’ve probably figured out that the double cleanse is recommended as part of your night routine. Even if you don’t wear a lot of make-up or any at all, during the course of your day at work and at play, your skin is going to pick up all sort of dust, pollution, gunk and other impurities that will clog up pores. Also, if you go to bed with all of those particles embedded in your face, you are not providing your skin cells the best conditions to regenerate naturally and you could actually be accelerating the aging process.

[Fun Fact: Your skin is constantly renewing itself to protect you from the elements. The outer layer of your skin, the epidermis, renews itself roughly every 27 days. By keeping it clean of toxins, you’re giving your skin the best possible chance to fully regenerate.]

The first cleanse. This is done using an oil-based cleanser and it does the heavy lifting. It breaks down the make-up you’ve been

wearing or didn’t remove all the way from the day before. It removes all that dirt, excess oil, SPF for sunscreen and sebum found on the surface of your skin. Make sure you take the time to really massage in the cleanser so that all of those toxins are washed away at this point. Instructions are pretty straight forward for the oil-based cleanser but I like to dab a little into the palm of my hand and massage it gently into my face in circular motions for about 45-60 seconds. Then, with your hands or soft wash cloth, wipe your face with some lukewarm water.

If you’re one those people with oily skin, maybe you think that you shouldn’t be using any kind of oil-based cleanser at this stage, but in some case the two gentle formulas in the double cleanse are considered to be generally better than a stronger formula. Our skin is as unique as each individual so ultimately, we have to practice and find the right combination that works for us. The same holds true for people with dry or sensitive skin. You should look for formulas that won’t dry out your skin any further.

The second cleanse. The next and final step (remember I said this was simple 😊) is done using a water-based cleanser. This step pretty much follows the same way as you did it before. Take your time again to really work this into your face, rinse again with lukewarm water and gently pat dry with a soft cloth or tower. The water cleanser you select should also hydrate and smooth your skin. This is the step that will wash away all of excess grime on your face.

You should now be ready for the remaining of your skin care routine which will probably be a good quality moisturizer at this stage. You may also want to check out my other blog post about retinol and work that into your night time skin care beauty regime.

Our skin is sensitive but tough, so no matter how much abuse we put it through day in and day out, with just a little bit of TLC, you can turn things around. That means you could probably start seeing improved results fairly quickly after you start implementing the double cleanse. Within a week or two your skin should feel cleaner and you should expect fewer acne breakouts and an overall brighter complexion. Now who doesn’t want a brighter complexion? Overall, the double cleanse will be adding about any extra 60-90 seconds to your nighttime routine which we can all easily spare. Find the right combination of gentle formulas that works best for you skin and let me know how it works.
